Chad Lyle went 2-for-2 this weekend on the dirt-track racing circuit.
After winning the modifieds final Friday night at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., the Lone Jack driver held off challenges from
Tim Karrick on Saturday night to win at Central Missouri Speedway.
Karrick settled for second at the rural Warrensburg track but trimmed points leader Aaron Marrant’s advantage to 44. Marrant finished seventh.
Third-place Terry Schultz, fourth-place Chad Staus and fifth-place Josh Stephens all lost ground on the top two drivers with only two races remaining this season.
The race for third place remains close with Schultz holding a 55-point lead over Staus.
Brian Johnson, of Independence, took the early lead and survived a late-race surge by Dean Wille to win the street stocks final.
Johnson took the early lead over Dustin Gehlken, of Sedalia, who won his first heat at the Warrensburg track earlier in the evening, according to a CMS press release.
Johnson’s first obstacle was a tire in turn four on lap 12, the press release said. He avoided it, but Wille took advantage. The two drivers raced side-by-side over the final two laps with Johnson holding on for his sixth win of the season at CMS.
Wille was second, Gehlken third, Jerry Schmidt fourth and Chad Eickleberry fifth.
Johnson was the only driver in the top five to gain on points leader Nic Bennett, of Oak Grove.
Bennett finished seventh and extended his lead over Tammy Korff to 70 points, Herb Dannar to 178 and Roger Stone to 200.
Johnson remains a distant fifth, 202 points off the pace, but he still has a shot at third place. He trails Dannar by 24 points.
Brett Rollert passed John Clancy on the high side on a restart on lap 10, the press release said, to maintain his points lead in the United Late Models Association.
Rollert, of Smithville, took the early lead, but Clancy passed the defending track champion on the low side to take control, the press release said.
Clancy finished second despite smoke emanating from his engine late in the race, according to UCM track officials.
Mike Ryun won a three-way battle for third place with Chad Clark settling for fourth and Bob King finishing fifth.
Points leader Jon Binning, of Warrensburg, padded his 80-point lead with a ninth-place finish. David Angell placed 15th and fell 92 points off the pace.
Randy Ainsworth’s 13th-place finish moved him to within 16 points of second.
Rusty Trimble, of Kansas City, took the early lead over Chris Brockway, as both started on the front row in the B-modified feature race.
Trimble maintained the lead, surviving two restarts.
Scotty Martin moved from his outside starting spot on row three into second place, passing Brian Ziegler on the inside with about two laps remaining, according to the press release.
Mark Evinger took fourth and Jeremy Lile was fifth.
Martin, of Independence, pushed his points lead over second-place Bobby Raybourn to 96.
Lile’s finish kept him alive for a shot at second place. He trails Raybourn by 28 points. Bryan Montgomery is 334 points off second place.
