Brooks, Clancy, Johnson, Martin win feature races

The Sedalia Democrat

Only three weeks remain in Central Missouri Speedway’s weekly racing series.

Everyone knew that when they entered the stands Saturday night at the rural Warrensburg track. Then they learned something else would end in three weeks.

Owners and promoters Earl and Susan Walls were ending a 15-year run with the raceway. They are selling the track and announcing their retirement, according to a CMS press release.

What that means for next season is unknown, but fans know the races for the track’s points championships remains tight.

Randy Ainsworth’s chances of winning the late models class championship  took a hit.

Brett Wood spun out on turn four of the 10th lap of the feature race, taking out Ainsworth’s car, according to the press release.

Ainsworth, who was  tied with David Angell for second place coming into the race, finished last.

Points leader Jon Binning and Angell earned top-10 finishes to pad their lead over Ainsworth.

Binning now holds an unofficial 80-point lead over Angell. Ainsworth slipped to third and is 100 off the pace.

On the track, Bob King jumped ahead of Steven Clancy early, but Clancy zeroed in on the leader with five laps remaining, the press release said.

King maintained his lead, but Mike Ryun began closing in on Clancy for second. However, Ryun went up and over the turn one embankment, according to CMS officials. He recovered to finish sixth.

With the pressure off behind him, Clancy, of Odessa, passed King on the 13th lap of the 15-lap race to take the lead, the press release said.

King finished second, Gary Billings Jr. was third, Allen Perryman fourth and Jeremy Watts fifth.

The B-modifieds feature race got off to a bumpy start. Chad Lebsock spun out on turn four, taking out the cars of Jacob Ebert and Jeremy

Lile as well as his own ride, the press release said.
Brad Smith and Rusty Trimble paced the field until the restart following Lebsock’s crash.

Scotty Martin, of Independence, came out strong on the restart and took the lead from Smith.

A mishap by Bob Dumit caused another yellow flag in the fourth lap. After the restart, Martin, Smith and Bryan Montgomery held the top three spots.

Montgomery began to catch up with Smith for second, but Chris Stout spun out to bring out another caution flag, according to CMS officials.

Smith maintained the second spot on the restart, and Martin continued to pull away to earn his eighth feature victory.

Montgomery finally got past Smith to take second and move into a third-place tie with Lile in the points race. Smith was third, Ethan Isaacs fourth and Trimble fifth.

Martin’s points lead grew by 16 points over second-place Bobby Raybourn.

John Brooks, of Warrensburg, and Brian Johnson started up front in the street stocks final, but Johnson’s night ended quickly when his engine began to smoke, the press release said.

Tammy Korff and Dale Atkinson stayed on Brooks’ tail early but couldn’t catch him in the end.

Atkinson finished second, Chad Eickleberry was third, Herb Dannar fourth and Jeremy Schmidt fifth.

Points leader Nic Bennett finished 10th and added to his lead over Tammy Korff who finished 11th.

Matt Johnson, of Archie, and Dustin Boney swapped the lead several times in the closing laps of the modifieds final, according to the press release, with Johnson coming out on top for his first feature win at CMS.

Kerry Davis was third, Jake Richards fourth and Dean Wille fifth.

Aaron Marrant maintained his points lead despite a 15th-place finish. His lead over Tim Karrick fell from 66 points to 54.

Terry Schultz’s sixth-place finish kept him in third place, but he shaved 18 points off his deficit of Marrant and six off Karrick’s pace.
