Democrat welcomes summer news interns

Posted

The Democrat has welcomed two news interns for the summer.

Skye Melcher and Andrea Merritt will be spending the summer months working in the Democrat newsroom as they learn more about community journalism.

“It has been several years since we’ve had interns in the newsroom, so I’m excited to offer an internship program again for area students,” Editor Nicole Cooke said. “I’m looking forward to helping Skye and Andrea get some real-world experience in a local newsroom while also learning new skills from them and getting extra content for our readers.”

Melcher helps produce the newly-launched Get Fit Podcast, which has new episodes every Friday, and writes news articles each week. She lives in Sedalia and graduated in May from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg where she studied digital media production with an emphasis in journalism. She hopes to pursue a career in journalism, hopefully ending up in entertainment news.

“I am so excited to be able to join the Sedalia Democrat newsroom,” Melcher said. “It is so rewarding to be able to write and produce for the newspaper that I grew up with.”

Merritt is primarily helping with community news coverage this summer, writing articles on a variety of topics for the Democrat’s print editions and website. She is from Warsaw and is a student at the University of Missouri in Columbia where she studies journalism. She plans to pursue a career as a print journalist.

“I'm so excited to have the opportunity to have hands-on experience at such a young age,” Merritt said. "I can't wait to learn from people who have such knowledge and wisdom in the newsroom."
