The tennis team at Sacred Heart is gaining momentum.

The Gremlins begin their second season with more than double the players they had in 2009.

Only six players competed last year but 14 have joined the team this season, according to first-year coach† Kathy Wissman.

Senior Alex Cline leads the Gremlins. The most accomplished player on the team, he qualified for the state tournament last season.

He reached the championship game of the Class 1, District 7 tournament before losing 6-1, 6-1 to Jonathan Gooch, of Kirksville.

Seniors Evan Fluty and Brent Gerke, junior Seth Stucker and sophomores Lakin Kehde and Alex Schreiner also return.

While Wissman hadnít set her lineups for singles or doubles when asked in mid-March, she knows who her doubles teams will be.

Cline and Kehde have been paired as well as Fluty and Gerke and newcomer Oscar Gonzalez and Schreiner.

Sophomore Sean Ki and freshmen Leah Carr, Holiday Fagen, Erin Keethler, Megan Ortmeyer, Luke Rosendale and Sam Stucker complete the teamís roster.

While the teamís increased numbers bode well for its future, half of the newcomers have never played tennis before.

ďWe are starting at square one with them,Ē Wissman said.

Wissman likes the attitude of her players. She said her teamís practice ethic and desire to make the tennis team as successful as the schoolís other sports programs are two of her teamís strengths.

Just like last year, the Gremlins will play no home matches.

The Gremlins will open their season Monday at Clinton.
