Rural carrier’s mail truck catches fire near Smithton

Posted: Wednesday, October 10, 2012 10:34 pm

Hundreds of pieces of mail and several packages were destroyed when a rural mail truck caught fire Tuesday near Smithton.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, the mail carrier, who covers Rural Route 1, was in the 24000 block of Arator Road when his vehicle stalled. After pushing it into a driveway, the carrier called a supervisor to pick him up and drive to Sedalia to get a part needed to fix the car. When he returned, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
