Warsaw’s Ozark Cigar Box Guitar Festival draws crowd

Caveman Dave or David Dougherty, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, tunes his cigar box guitar before his 1:15 p.m. performance Saturday, Aug. 6 at the second annual Ozark Cigar Box Guitar Festival in Warsaw. Dougherty performs all over the United States and just completed a gig in the northwest.

Summer events in Sedalia begin with the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival and end with the Missouri State Fair, but there are more than a few events throughout the area in the months in between.

The Ivory Market from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 22 at Buckeye Acres Produce in Warrensburg. The one-day event is filled with antiques, artisan collectibles, fresh produce, custom woodworking and vintage finds plus live music and food vendors. Admission is $2 for adults. CBC Beerfest from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 22 in downtown Sedalia. Craft Beer Cellar is hosting its first big event, which will feature more than a dozen Missouri breweries, wineries and distilleries plus food trucks and live music. Proceeds benefit Open Door. Summer Nights at Daum Museum of Contemporary Art at State Fair Community College in Sedalia. There are special evening events and extended hours on the fourth Thursday, May through August. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 27, July 25 and Aug. 22. Events will begin at 6 p.m. and are free to the public. For more information, visit daummuseum.org. 

Booze N Bluegrass in the Garden in Cole Camp. From 5 to 8 p.m. June 29, enjoy craft beer, varieties from 10 to 12 wineries, food vendors, music from Out on a Limb, and more. Cost is $15 per person. For more information, visit visitbentoncomo.com.

Von Holten Ranch Bluegrass Festival. From June 29-30, there will be vendors, food trucks, door prizes, music from Eric Lewis and the New Kentucky Colonels, and Matthew Cozart at Von Holten Ranch in Mora. For more information, visit VonHoltenRanch.com.

National Soap Box Derby Race on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. Events will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 30 to July 3 with the championship race at 8:30 a.m. July 3. For more information, visit ndr.org.

Cheers + Chill Out on the Missouri River Wine Trail from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 20 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Visit seven wineries in mid-Missouri, each featuring a frozen treat paired with local wine. For more information, visit missouririverwinetrail.com.

Backyard Bash at the Mohler Building on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. The annual summer event hosted by the Sedalia Lions Club will be at 5 p.m. July 20 featuring Five Turn Knot and Twisted Fate plus a beer garden and food trucks. For more information, visit facebook.com/SedaliaLionsClub.

52nd annual Wheelmen Meet July 24-28 in Sedalia. The meet will take place at State Fair Community College and the Missouri State Fairgrounds along with the Century Day Ride on the Katy Trail. President's Lawn Concert at the University of Central Missouri. This free community event July 29 at Selmo Park will include an ice cream social at 6 p.m. and music at 7 p.m. from the Warrensburg Community Band under the direction of Professor Emeritus Russell Coleman.


Ozark Cigar Box Festival Aug. 3-4 at Drake Harbor in Warsaw. International touring artists, nationally-recognized and amateur musicians will play live bluegrass, rock, country and blues music using their handmade cigar box guitars. Food and merchandise vendors will contribute to the festivities and there will be a beer garden and KCBS sanctioned Back Yard BBQ Competition. 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Missouri State Fair Aug. 8-18 in Sedalia. The state fair is the state’s premier agriculture event that offers something for all Missouri families such as livestock shows, live music every night, free entertainment throughout the day, motorsports, rodeo and bull riding, truck and tractor pulls, auto racing, tons of vendors, art, contests, and plenty of food.
