A roadside bomb in Afghanistan killed two American soldiers and injured others on Saturday.
The two paratroopers, Sgt. Ian McLaughlin of Virginia and Pfc. Miguel Villalon of Illinois, were conducting combat operations in Kandahar as part of the 82nd Airborne.
"Their loved ones are now surrounded by a caring community offering comfort and assistance through this difficult time," Col. Art Sellers, Commander of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, said in a statement.
Villalon completed multiple training sessions at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri in 2019. This was his first combat deployment, according to the statement.
The Associated Press reported that the Taliban immediately took credit for Saturday's attack.
"The incident remains under investigation," the 82nd Airborne Division's Public Affairs Office said in the release issued Sunday.
