It is that time of year again when patriotism begins to gain a bit of momentum. Fireworks are exploding and the American flag is appearing on every corner. What do we do so that this focus does not soon disappear? The answer is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14. It states, “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and heal their land.” Does America still trust enough in God to turn and lean completely on Him?

Even the pledge to our nation's flag declares our dependence on God. It reads, “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Are we really One Nation under God as our pledge states? You see, contrary to what many would have you believe; this nation was established as a nation that placed complete trust and honor in God and God alone!

So if this is the case, and we truly do still trust in God, shouldn’t we do everything we can to rebuild and strengthen our great nation? In order to establish this great task, there are four requirements according to 2 Chronicles 14. The first requirement is to declare your dependence on God. 2 Chronicles says that we are to call on the name of God and humble ourselves before Him.

This heritage of a Christian nation becomes the foundation from which we build our lives and our nation. It in some way or another affects each and every one of us. If the heritage and foundation is not kept intact, then the weight of generation after generation will cause it to collapse. No matter how strong the building may appear, if cracks form in the foundation and they are not repaired, the building will not stand.

The second requirement that one can see is, we must pray for America. The groundwork for the freedom we enjoy has been laid over the past 200 plus years. When the first Continental Congress met, and were debating about how the Declaration of Independence should be written, Ben Franklin got up and said – “Gentlemen, if it is true that not one single petal from any flower falls to the ground without escaping God’s attention, will the distress of this nation go unheeded? Let us therefore determine to seek His face.” After having said that, 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence went to their knees and began to pray and seek God’s wisdom.

The third requirement is to always seek after God. The greatness of a nation does not rest in its military power, technological advancement, or its national wealth. Solomon, the wisest of men, said: “Godliness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” Proverbs 14:34  (NLT)

Our permissive society turns freedom into license and rights into riots. In concerned of a higher standard of living, some fail to live by any standard and riches are elevated above righteousness. We abandon the moral law and then shake our heads in disbelief as crime increases. “Don't be misled. Remember that you can't ignore God and get away with it. You will always reap what you sow!” Galatians 6:7 (NLT)

Our final requirement is to keep your freedom in perspective. 2 Chronicles says that we are to turn from our wicked ways. I fear that our proclaimed freedom has become the very thing that enslaves us.“You may say, ‘I am allowed to do anything.’ But I reply, ‘Not everything is good for you.’ And even though ‘I am allowed to do anything,’ I must not become a slave to anything.” 1 Corinthians 6:12 (NLT)

The problem we face is not with the outside, it is the inside of man. We can’t just change the educational system and fix it.  We can’t just change the welfare system and fix it.  We can’t just change the government and fix it. The only way we can fix it is to change the hearts and lives of people!

The end result is that God will in turn pour out His blessing. “… I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14b (NLT)
