Grow and Glow Garden Club FGCM

The Grow and Glow Garden Club FGCM met March 16 at the home of Charleen Meyer. Upon arrival, the 11 members were served St. Patrick’s themed refreshments of Watergate cake, mint brownies, mixed nuts, coffee, tea, and water. Assisting Meyer were Micki Williams and Linda Reid. Each person donned a festive, tiny green party hat, courtesy of Meyer.

Club president Barbara Harrison conducted the business meeting. Each person named a bird or “critter” that had visited their garden recently for the Roll Call.

Under Old Business, the president will again visit with a librarian at the Price James Library regarding a summer gardening activity.

Under new business, the president recommended that a 2020 Financial Audit not be conducted due to the pandemic. The membership approved the recommendation.

The Federation Day at the Missouri State Fair, Aug. 18, will be a Small Standard Flower Show.

There will be a houseplant exchange at the April meeting. The Grow and Glow Park Clean-Up is rescheduled for April 6. March birthdays were honored: Cynthia Brodersen and Barbara Harrison on March 5, and Twila Garber on March 9. Members were reminded to bring food in April for the Versailles Food Pantry. The Versailles Blue Star committee is waiting for better weather to spread gravel and install military plaques.

A headcount of those planning to go on the overnight trip to the Weston area May 18 is needed at the April 20 meeting.

Reception ideas for Linda Houston, incoming FGCM President from the Central District, were discussed. FGCM New Officer Installation will be at 10 a.m. May 24 via Zoom. All are invited to participate.

Dorothy Collett, program chair, led the program on “Constructing Gourd Bird Houses.” She has extensive experience growing and decorating gourds for a variety of purposes.

Most members had arrived with supplies such as gloves, pencil, ruler, scissors, screwdriver, pliers, and Exacto knife. They had a design in mind from pictures Collett provided on Facebook.  She provided gourds and directions. Each person selected a gourd and cut an entry hole, drain holes, and hanger holes. The rest would be done at a later date.

Special thanks were provided to Meyers for delicious refreshments and opening her home for the meeting, and to Collett for the outstanding program.

The April Price James Library arrangement will be provided by Linda Dahl.

Bothwell Health Center Auxiliary Board

The Bothwell Health Center Auxiliary Board met March 10 with 12 members present. The minutes were read and approved and the treasurer’s report was also approved.

On March 1, the gift shop reopened after closing two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers were welcomed back by many staff members at the hospital and many former customers. Gift Shop hours are 9 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Auxiliary is happy to announce it is selling the wire trees that Dr. Doug Kiburz has made. They are called Jalen Wire Trees and they are in the gift shop.

In June 2021, the Auxiliary Gift Shop will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Auxiliary members want to celebrate this special occasion and have set up a 50-year anniversary committee. The committee members are Karen Kay Taylor, Jackie Butler and Christine Detherage. If anyone has any ideas or articles that would be interesting for this occasion, please contact any of these members.

Jackie Butler and Shirley McCown completed the audit of the 2020 gift shop treasury.

The Amazing Volunteer for the month of March 2021 is Colleen Mather. Mather joined the Auxiliary in 1998. She volunteers in the Gift Shop. She likes to greet the customers that come into the gift shop and also likes visiting with the volunteer she is working with. Thank you, Colleen, for a job well done.

Auxiliary members are so glad to have the Auxiliary Gift Shop open again. If interested in becoming an Auxiliary volunteer, call Sara at 660-827-0343.

The next Auxiliary Board meeting is scheduled for April 14.
