Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa
The Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, international honorary sorority for women educators, met Monday, Sept. 27 at Christ & Trinity Lutheran Church and via zoom. Thirty-two members were present.
Vice President Andrea Eppenauer presided. The May minutes and treasurer’s report were approved. Eppenauer shared the new budget line items. Treasurer Mary Beatty is collecting chapter and national dues.
Corresponding Secretary Jennifer Crane, received thank-you notes from Retrieving Freedom and the Sedalia Police Department.
The Membership Committee is asking for names of persons to invite into our sorority. Three names were submitted.
Information was distributed concerning scholarships available for teachers from ADK International.
The Pettis County Relay for Life on Oct. 23 will have members of the group walking and selling baked goods. The group will have a basket in the basket auction.
The door prize was won by Karen Twenter.
Be Forever Young
Be Forever Young met at Parkview Christian Church on Monday Oct. 11. Twenty members attended. President Elayne Gordon introduced herself as a child of God and a follower of Jesus Christ, who had traded his life for hers. Gordon welcomed members back and thanked them for attending.
Gordon asked the group to raise prayer needs and share blessings members had experienced and then went to God in prayer concerning the same.
Happy Birthday was sung by the group for Helen Adams and Julia McGee.
Gordon read the minutes from the September 2021 meeting. The minutes were accepted as written. Treasurer Wanda Rasa sent in a report of $491. Gordon and Rasa will meet to discuss dues and attendance figures as they impact the Christmas Banquet.
The devotion was given by Dixie Rowan and was a piece by Greg Asimakoupoulos.
In Old Business: Be Forever Young still needs a secretary to write minutes and submit a copy to the Sedalia Democrat. In more old business the club will go to Overland Park to The New Theatre to see “Menopause: The Musical” on Nov. 3. The bus, driven by Dave Stockton, will leave before 9:30 a.m. Five dollars is needed per person for the use of the bus. The discussion continued about the Christmas banquet. The group decided that Colton’s would cater the meal. A vote was taken to determine the menu. The votes will be tallied and the menu will be announced at the next meeting.
In New Business: The New Theatre play sign-up for “Johnny and June” will be available at the next meeting in November. Fees will be collected by Dec. 13.
Gordon thanked hostesses Gerry Sumners and Ruth Stratman for their efforts in setting up the pot luck buffet and after cleaning up after the club’s luncheon.
Gordon then handed the meeting over to Dave Gerken with Pettis County First. Gerken introduced his colleagues Brittnie Schorran and Bill Taylor. Pettis County First is an organization that is working to get the county to write and pass an ordinance regulating landfills. According to a study done by Penn State University, the presence of a landfill can devalue properties by 12-15%. Mrs. Schorran discussed that in regulating landfills we must take into consideration the odor, air quality, water quality, and the impacts on health of those living, working and going to schools nearby. Currently, 11 counties send their garbage to the Pettis County landfill. Pettis County First encouraged all attendees to the meeting to contact their commissioner to let their opinions about landfill regulation in Pettis County.
The meeting was then turned back to Gordon, who led the group in The Lord’s Prayer. The next meeting will be Nov. 8. The meeting was adjourned.
