Filing ends for primary election

Posted

Candidate filing ended Tuesday for the Aug. 2 primary election in Missouri.

County candidates could file at the Pettis County Clerk’s Office while state and federal candidates filed with the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office. Filing began Feb. 22.

Candidates must list a political party. Those who win their party’s race in August will go on to the General Election on Nov. 8.

U.S. Senate

Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., announced last year that he would not be seeking another term after serving since 2010. That announcement led to a long list of candidates making their own announcements to seek Blunt’s vacant seat in 2022.

Republicans who filed include Patrick A. Lewis, Eric Schmitt, Billy Long, Eric Greitens,

Bernie Mowinski, C.W. Gardner, Deshon Porter, Vicky Hartzler, Dave Sims, Mark McCloskey, Eric McElroy, Dennis Lee Chilton, Robert Allen, Dave Schatz, Hartford Tunnell, Kevin C. Schepers, Rickey Joiner, Robert Olson, Russel Pealer Breyfogle Jr., Darrell Leon McClanahan III, and Curtis D. Vaughn.

Missouri Auditor

Auditor Nicole Galloway, a Democrat, announced last year she was not seeking re-election after serving in her position since 2015.

Democratic candidate Alan Green filed.

Libertarian candidate John A. Hartwig Jr. filed.

U.S. House District 4

According to the Associated Press, the state’s candidacy filing period for Congress closed Tuesday without new Congressional voting districts in place. The state House passed a redistricting plan in January that kept six Republican and two Democratic districts, but work stalled in the Senate as a small group of conservative senators pushed for a 7-1 map.

The state Senate finally passed a 6-2 map on Thursday, but final approval for the redistricting plan has not been reached.

AP states that lawmakers could wait until mid-May, the end of the 2022 session, to pass a plan and could also change state law to temporarily re-open the filing period for candidates.

The following candidates are based on the current map.

U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler, R-Harrisonville, is running for Blunt’s Senate seat, leaving her House seat open for a new candidate.

Republicans who filed include Jim Campbell, Rick Brattin, William (Bill) Irwin, Mark Alford, Kalena Bruce, Taylor Burks, Sara Walsh and Kyle Stonner LaBrue.

Democratic candidate Jack Truman filed.

Libertarian candidate Randy Langkraehr filed.

State Senate District 28

State Sen. Sandy Crawford, R-Buffalo, is up for reelection in 2022. If she wins, this will be her last four-year term in the Senate due to term limits.

Republicans who filed include Crawford, Bill Yarberry, of Fair Play, and Janet Arnold, of Bolivar.

State House District 52

After the House Independent Bipartisan Citizens Commission unanimously approved a new House map in January, the northern portion of Pettis County remains represented by District 52. However, the county is no longer represented by Districts 48, 51 and 54.

State Rep. Brad Pollitt, R-Sedalia, has been challenged by Democratic candidate Rene Vance, of Sedalia.

State House District 54

After the House Independent Bipartisan Citizens Commission unanimously approved a new House map in January, the northern portion of Johnson County remains represented by District 54. However, the county is no longer represented by Districts 51, 52 and 53.
