Friday sees first frost

Severe thunderstorm predicted this weekend

Posted

Although mild weather graced the area this week, Friday morning saw a small amount of frost when overnight temperatures plunged into the 30s, although weekend predictions are saying there’s a chance for severe thunderstorms on Sunday.

The National Weather Service stated the chances of rain will increase on Saturday with the chance of severe storms on Sunday afternoon and into the evening. NWS went on to say due to several Pacific storm systems developing, a low-pressure system in the Central Plains will bring heavy rain to the area over the weekend.

“A developing low-pressure system is forecast to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Central Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley overnight (Friday) ahead of a lifting warm front,” the NWS noted.

As the system progresses the warm front will continue northward and begin to enter Missouri Saturday afternoon. The NWS reported that because of the two fronts, any thunderstorms that develop may be severe.

“Given the potential for these thunderstorms to produce damaging wind, large hail, and an isolated tornado or two, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk of Severe Thunderstorms for portions of northeastern Kansas and far western Missouri effective

Saturday morning to Sunday morning,” the Weather Service said.

Friday evening the NWS issued a hazardous weather outlook that stated, “A more potent system will move into the area on Sunday, with an enhanced risk of severe storms Sunday and

Sunday night. The highest chances of severe storms will be in the afternoon/evening. All forms of severe weather are possible. Additional thunderstorms will be possible Tuesday night into

Wednesday. A few strong to severe storms will once again be possible.”
