The man who allegedly shot two Pettis County deputies earlier this month was indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday, May 13.
James Joseph Elsea, 62, of Marshall was indicted on possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, discharging a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possessing firearms after a prior felony conviction.
The indictment spans back to the early morning hours of May 2, when the Pettis County Special Emergency Response Team attempted a no-knock narcotics warrant at a residence belonging to Elsea in the 27000 block of MO BB Highway near Longwood.
A statement from the United States Department of Justice states four rounds were fired from within the residence while an officer was attempting to cut through a security bar on the door.
Two Pettis County deputies suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a hospital. They were welcomed back to Sedalia on May 4.
According to a federal affidavit, ATF agents responded to the scene and seized a Taurus model PT111 G2A (G2C), 9mm semi-automatic handgun, which was loaded with one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine.
Agents also seized a Mossberg, model MC1SC, 9mm semi-automatic handgun. Elsea is a previously convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law.
Elsea was previously charged with possessing firearms as a felon May 2.
As of Tuesday, no state charges have been filed.
