The Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education has approved the promotion of Avery Mather to vocal music director at Smith-Cotton High School. Mather, a member of Smith-Cotton’s Class of 2017, has been the music teacher at Horace Mann Elementary the past two school years.
Mather will lead high school vocal music education, including direction of auditioned choirs and the New Score Singers show choir. Mather graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in music education with an emphasis in vocal music education. He currently is pursuing graduate studies at the University of Central Missouri.
In high school, Mather was an active member in the music and theater departments.
“My time in New Score inspired me to pursue music education as a career, and has brought me to where I am today,” he said.
“Smith-Cotton is excited to have Mr. Mather back home at S-C," S-C Principal Wade Norton said. "As an alum of New Score, we are excited to see him take us to new heights. His energy and positive outlook will benefit all students involved in our vocal music department. We are excited for the work to begin with students and even more excited to showcase it to our community.”
