Starting the week of June 14, all lanes of traffic on the Missouri Route 83 bridge, over U.S. Route 65 south in Warsaw, will be closed. Contractors will be removing the bridge deck, replacing it with a new surface and installing new guardrails.
The Route 83 bridge is expected to be closed until mid-September. Signs and message boards will alert drivers to the bridge closing, however, no detour will be signed. Drivers will have access to entrances on either end of the bridge, but will not be able to drive through the work zone. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, nighttime lane closures for U.S. Route 65 south are expected.
“During the closures, drivers will exit on the ramps, whether going north or southbound, go up to the intersection, then proceed back down the ramp (the exit ramp off of the Route 83 bridge),” MoDOT Resident Engineer Danny Roeger said. “We have to do this in order to remove the existing bridge deck, and we don’t want any potential debris or hazards falling on drivers underneath the bridge.”
The prime contractors for the Route 83 bridge rehabilitation will be Hartman and Company Inc. As per the project contract, they will also be replacing the driving surface of Benton Country Route H bridge over Cole Camp Creek. Construction will begin after the completion of the Route 83 bridge.
The contract completion date for both bridges is Dec. 1. The project was led through the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program. The total project cost is $1.98 million and will be federally funded.
According to a press release from MoDOT, the current structure was built in 1976 and is experiencing increasing deterioration. Approximately 2,300 vehicles cross the bridge daily.
