Smithton, La Monte voters to cast ballots Tuesday

Posted

Pettis County will host a special election on Tuesday, Nov. 7, although only two cities will cast ballots.

Two questions are on the ballot, one for the City of Smithton regarding the Pettis County Fire Protection District and one for the City of La Monte asking voters to consider a tax. Only voters who live in the City of La Monte or the Smithton Fire Protection District are eligible to vote in Tuesday’s election.

Absentee voting began Sept. 26 and continues through 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6. Absentee voting will also be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Pettis County Clerk’s Office in the Pettis County Annex, 215 E. Fifth St. in Sedalia.

On Election Day, voters can cast a ballot from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the County Clerk’s Office.

People can change their address even on Election Day if they moved within Pettis County, but anyone who moved from a different county is considered a new registration.

Voters can check if they are registered and view a sample ballot at pettisclerk.com. For more information, visit pettisclerk.com or facebook.com/PettisCountyElectionsOffice or call the Clerk’s office at 660-826-5000 ext. 918 or La Strada’s cellphone at 660-281-7767.

The following contested races and issues will be on Pettis County ballots, although ballots will vary depending on where a voter lives.

City of Smithton – Proposition S

Shall the Fire Protection District #1 of Pettis County, Missouri extend its boundaries to include all property currently protected by the Smithton Rural Fire Association?

City of La Monte

Shall the City of La Monte apply and collect the local sales tax on the titling of motor vehicles, trailers, boats, and outboard motors that are subject to state sales tax under section RSMo 144.020 and purchased from a source other than a licensed Missouri Dealer? Approval of this measure will result in an increase of local revenue to provide for vital services for the City of La Monte and it will remove a competitive advantage that non-Missouri dealers of motor vehicles, outboard motors, boats, and trailers have over Missouri dealers of motor vehicles, outboard motors, boats, and trailers.
