City of Sedalia voters approve Proposition A

Posted

City of Sedalia voters approved a measure to reduce the city’s utility license tax on electricity while eliminating a long-standing tax cap for the largest electric users during the Tuesday, Aug. 4 primary election.

Listed as Proposition A, the item received a 69.86% approval rating, tallying 2,538 of the 3,633 votes cast.

The approval allows the city to lower its license tax on electric light and power companies from 5% to 4.75% of gross receipts from electricity sales within the city. It also repeals reduced tax rates and exemptions currently in place for large industrial customers.

The item was one of two local ballot questions voted on within Pettis County.

In Smithton, Proposition T.I.G.E.R did not receive the four-sevenths vote required for approval. The measure received a 50.69% yes vote (513 votes) and a 49.31% (499) no vote.

If the item were approved, it would have made way for funding for improvements within the Smithton R-6 School District.

Pettis County voters also matched the statewide results for constitutional amendments.

The County played a part in approving Amendment 1 (7,030-1,943), approving Amendment 2 (6,785-2,053), blocking Amendment 4 (7,057-1,967) and blocking Amendment 5 (7,679-1,349).
