I'm asking everyone reading this to vote NO on Amendment 5 which is on the August 2026 ballot.
Amendment 5 would do away with paying income tax which sounds like a good deal for all the people still employed. But how are we going to replace that money that pays for schools, health care, roads and state infrastructure, etc? I keep hearing about a possible increase in sales tax on purchases including groceries and tax on rent, prescriptions, etc. and services such as car repairs, haircuts and who knows what else! For most of us that means paying more taxes than an income tax.
Amendment 5 would also do away with the previously voter-approved Hancock Amendment which prevents politicians from raising taxes without voter approval. For me that gets an immediate NO! What about you?
You have to wonder who was the genius that came up with this idea. How much out-of-state money from wealthy donors is behind this? And why?
Please ask your friends, neighbors and especially younger voters to stand up and participate in the August 4 election. What happens this Fall and in the future depends on all of us.
Sincerely,
Ginny Brainard
