Booster vaccines now recommended for all adults

Pettis County added 83 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the total number of cases to 7,690, according to the Pettis County Health Center. 

According to the Pettis County COVID-19 Task Force briefing issued Monday, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services website reports Pettis County has a positivity rate of 8.9 % for the past seven days, which is a decrease from 9.5% for the last week with PCR testing. The locally calculated positivity rate for the week of Nov. 8-14 was 10.25%. This week there were 571 PCR tests and 396 antigen tests for a total of 967. Last week there were 890 tests. 

The groups with the highest number of new cases Nov. 12-18 were 13-18-year-olds with 16, 5-12-year-olds with 10 and 0-4-year-olds with three. The next closest age group was 45-49-year-olds with eight. There were 29 individuals birth to 18 with positive cases reported in the week time period. Since July 1, 24.16% of total cases are in individuals 0-18 years of age, which is an increase from the 23.51% reported last week. 

Vaccine breakthrough rates for the week of Nov. 15-21 is 13 out of 83, which is 15.6% or 84.4% not vaccinated. There was one positive in a person receiving the booster dose.

The briefing states that as of Friday, there were 996 hospitalized in Missouri as compared to 943 hospitalized with COVID last week. There are 243 people in ICU and 128 on ventilators as compared to 236 people in ICU and 137 on ventilators last week.

There are three individuals hospitalized at Bothwell Regional Health Center as compared to eight last week. There are zero patients on a ventilator.  

The DHSS website reports 110 deaths in Pettis County as compared to 105 last week. 

Approximately 43.7% of the population of Pettis County residents have started vaccination.   According to the state website, 18,513 Pettis County residents have started vaccination and 16,569 are considered fully vaccinated, which is approximately 39.1% of the population. Pettis County is falling behind the state rate of 57.6% have started vaccination and 50.7% fully vaccinated. The state is reporting 68.9% of the population over 18 has started and 61.6% are fully vaccinated. For Pettis County, 55.1% of the population 18 and older have started vaccination (17,579) and 49.7% (15.843) are fully vaccinated.

The Pettis County Health Center has regular walk-in clinics from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays and from noon to 3 p.m. Fridays. First doses are available as well as second doses and third/booster doses. The health center will be closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving.

Bothwell is administering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to children aged 5 to 11. People who want the vaccine for their child in that age group can make appointments at Bothwell TLC Pediatrics from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday by calling 660-829-5852 or 660-829-8888 or at Bothwell Health Center-Truman Lake in Warsaw from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays by calling 660-438-6800. 

Following new federal guidance released Friday, the DHSS issued updated orders that expand recommendations for booster shots to include all adults ages 18 years and older who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine at least six months after their second dose. Previous guidance recommended booster shots for people over 65 years of age, those with underlying health issues or those at heightened risk because of a living or working condition.

The briefing states eligible adults are encouraged to get a booster ahead of the holiday season when other respiratory infections become common and people find themselves in close contact with extended family and friends.

Bothwell provides monoclonal antibody infusion treatment for people who have tested positive for COVID-19 and who have had onset of symptoms within the last 10 days. Monoclonal antibody infusion can help the body fight off COVID-19 and reduce the risk of severe illness or hospitalization.

People meeting those conditions should call the Bothwell infusion center at 660-829-8830 to be screened for potential treatment. The medication is free, and an administration fee will be charged.

COVID-19 testing is offered at Bothwell Walk In Clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. People must register for an appointment by calling 660-827-7900. 

This week’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic is from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24 (Pfizer) at Bothwell Health Center-Truman Lake in Warsaw. People may walk in; however, appointments are encouraged by calling 660-829-8888 or scheduling in Bothwell’s patient portal, MyBothwellHealth at www.brhc.org/portal or in the MHealth app.
