Be Forever Young

Be Forever Young met at Parkview Christian Church Monday, Nov. 8. Eighteen members and one guest attended. President Elayne Gordon introduced herself as a child of God and a follower of Jesus Christ, who had traded his life for hers. Gordon welcomed members back and recognized guest Mary Burns, and thanked them for attending.

Gordon asked the group to raise prayer needs and share blessings members had experienced and then went to God in prayer concerning the same.

“Happy Birthday” was sung by the group for Dixie Rowan, Diane Zinn and Mary Burns all with November birthdays.

Gordon read the meeting minutes. The minutes were accepted as written. The treasurer’s report was delivered by Gordon as sent by text from Wanda Rasa.

The devotion was given by Rhonda Zink and an amusing poem delivered by Elaine Wood that discussed the turkey’s revenge for Thanksgiving.

As a point of Old Business, Be Forever Young still needs a secretary to write minutes and submit a copy to the Sedalia Democrat. In further Old Business, the next New Theatre Play will be Jan. 26. The Play is “Johnny and June,” the cost is $39. Monies are needed by the next meeting. The cost for bus gas and maintenance is $5 on the day of the trip.

The Christmas Banquet will be hosted on Monday, Dec. 13 at Parkview Christian Church. The meal will be catered by Colton’s and will include loaded chicken, caesar salad, baked potato, green bean casserole, and apple crisp. If members have paid for at least six meetings worth of dues in the past two years, the meal is included in membership. If members have not met this requirement, then their cost for the meal is calculated taking the cost and subtracting the amount of dues paid so far. The Christmas Banquet will also include a Greedy Santa game.  Members wishing to play the game will bring a gift-wrapped present costing between $5 and $10.

In New Business the signup lists for 2022 are ready; these include hostessing, devotion and entertainment/informational presentations.

Gordon thanked hostesses Elaine Wood and Sydney Nolan for setting up the pot luck buffet and for cleaning up after the club’s luncheon.

Gordon then handed the meeting over to Kathleen Boswell who portrayed Mildred Whiteman Rogers, in costume, as the aunt of George Whiteman. George Whiteman’s aunt told of his younger years by describing him as an exceptionally curious child who during his school years was moved to the next grade a total of two times as his intellect out-shone his peers. Although George Whitman attended Rolla School of Mines for a time, his lack of funds kept him from continuing his studies there. But it seemed that all Whiteman ever wanted to do was fly airplanes like the WW1 Flying Aces. His dream came true when he was able to fly for the Army Air Corps.

Although Whiteman was initially buried in Hawaii, his body was returned to Sedalia and is interred at Memorial Park Cemetery. Whiteman Air Force Base was later renamed in his honor.  Boswell is a member of the Missouri Humanities Speaker’s Bureau. Gordon thanked Boswell and the members thoroughly enjoyed the presentation.

Gordon reminded the club that the next meeting would be held Dec. 13. The devotion will be given by Mary Louise Dove. The hostesses for the next meeting will be Mary Louise Dove and Sandra Ficken. Entertainment will be provided by Greedy Santa.

Gordon led in the “Lord’s Prayer,” and the group enjoyed a potluck luncheon. The meeting was adjourned.
