Contractor discovers cornerstone of first Broadway School in 1903

Sedalia’s first Broadway School building was begun in 1867, following a directive from the state that public schools be built for both Black and white children. The bond election to fund the schools was very contentious, caused by individuals who believed education was a privilege reserved for well-to-do white children at private schools.
