Smith-Cotton to celebrate Homecoming

Smith-Cotton High School will celebrate Homecoming on Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8. 

Students will begin the celebration early with the Homecoming dance on Saturday, Oct. 1. Students will also participate in spirit days throughout the school week Oct. 3-7.

Homecoming weekend festivities will kick off with the annual Homecoming parade at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 in downtown Sedalia. The grand marshal will be Connie Miller of First Student.

The parade will be followed by a tailgate party hosted by the Sedalia School District Foundation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the SCHS gym. Alumni, students and parents are welcome to enjoy a free meal of a hot dog and chips; donations are welcomed. The Tiger Pride Marching Band will play before heading to the stadium for the pregame show.

At 7 p.m., the Smith-Cotton Tigers will take on Capital City at Tiger Stadium. After the football game, S-C DECA will host a Fifth Quarter event for students in sixth grade and older from 9 p.m. to midnight in the SCHS gym. The cost is $3.

On Saturday, alumni are invited to an open house from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Smith-Cotton Junior High, the former home of Smith-Cotton High School, and enjoy a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 at the door; there is no cost for children 5 and younger. The breakfast will include vocal music performances from students at SCJH, Sedalia Middle School, Skyline Elementary, Horace Mann Elementary, Heber Hunt Elementary, Washington Elementary, and Parkview Elementary. 

Guided tours of the current SCHS campus will also be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday for class reunions, alumni and the public.

Several class reunions are scheduled for Homecoming weekend, including the Class of 1953’s 69th reunion at noon Friday at Bandana’s Bar-B-Q; Class of 1956’s 66th luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Sedalia Senior Center in the Heckart Community Center; Class of 1972’s 50th reunion Friday and Saturday; Class of 1977’s 45th reunion Saturday; Class of 1981’s 41st reunion Friday and Saturday, Class of 1982’s 40th reunion Saturday; and Class of 1992’s 30th reunion Saturday. 

Also, during Homecoming weekend, the SCHS show choir 50th-anniversary celebration will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Heckart Performing Arts Center.
