Helen G. Steel Music Club

The Helen G. Steel Music Club gathered Sept. 23 at the Heard Memorial Club House for its regular bimonthly meeting. President Stacey Beard welcomed twenty-one members and guests.

Beard began the meeting exploring our musical heritage with the history of the Helen G. Steele Music Club, founded in 1893, as it began as the Ladies Musical Society. Sedalia was growing as a vital railroad hub and also becoming a powerhouse for the arts.

Musician and member Liz Kehl presented the program “Back to Basics” sharing proper etiquette for musicians and enthusiasts. During her presentation, various members spontaneously sprang from the audience acting out being ill dressed for the occasion, making loud noises-eating snacks, applauding at the wrong moment, exulted boisterously during performances and answered personal phone calls with loud conversations. It was quite entertaining and impressionable.

Sheryl Heisterberg reminded members the Symphony concert for the fall will be “Songs of the Soul” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Heckart Performing Arts Center Smith Cotton High School.

The guest artist Cameron “Cam” Cody is an international performer. Music Club volunteers Kim Graves and Katie Beard will help serve refreshments.

Sorosis is sponsoring a charter bus trip Oct. 3 to the Berlin Wall at Union Station in Kansas City and the Vaile Mansion in Independence.  Lunch will be on your own at Crown Center, tickets are $143.00 Contact Jean Gallagher, 660-827-4016.

Board members present stood and were recognized.

The luncheon was catered by Tammy Schrader, owner of the Chat Shack, and served by Christene Meyer, Mallory Graves and Marty Graves.

Sheri Matz arranged for guest speaker Shelley Rounds, Director of the Scott Joplin Foundation, who presented “Celebrating Scott Joplin.” She highlighted Sedalia, Missouri's central role in Joplin’s story and as the site of the annual Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival, emphasizing Joplin’s legacy and importance in American music history.
