Friday morning at around 3:30 a.m., the Sedalia Police Department was called to 1815 S. Kentucky Ave. in reference to a gunshot victim. Sedalia Police, Sedalia Fire, and the Pettis County Ambulance District responded to the residence and found Tylar Simon, 32, suffering from a gunshot wound.
“We got called out this morning about a subject that was shot,” SPD Cmdr. David Woolery told the Democrat. “The subject was home in bed whenever some people came in and possibly a disturbance ensued and one of the homeowners was shot.”
Neighbor Scott Botello said he usually never locks his doors in the day in the quiet neighborhood. He was awakened by his dog’s barking, though he said he never did hear gunshots.
“I never did look outside, and I didn't hear nothing till now, usually if she barks there's somebody coming to the door,” Botello said. “Man that's crazy, somebody got shot and their door kicked in. I assume it's a father and son, I've lived here for six months. The only thing you hear is dogs barking, that's about it, people kind of walking down the street.”
Lifesaving measures were attempted but Simon died. Pettis County Coroner Skip Smith pronounced Simon dead at the scene.
Detectives were seen photographing the scene and multiple shell-casing markers were visible on the front porch of the modest home.
“I seen them over there taking pictures all over the front porch and stuff this morning and taking pictures, kind of inside and stuff,” Botello said.
Botello didn’t know the neighbors personally but did notice them from his home across the street. Police knocked on his door and asked him if he had seen anything.
“All I ever seen was they, you know, they bicker and argue a little bit,” Botello said. “Whenever they’re going in and out and their door slams or something, but other than that they were quiet.”
No arrests have been made at this time. There is an ongoing investigation as investigators and detectives continue to follow up on leads.
“I know that kid, he's way too young to die like that,” Botello said. “That young and, you know, dying so it's crazy, that's crazy here in the neighborhood. Makes you want to lock all the doors.”
