Five injured in DWI crash

A man was arrested Saturday after crashing a vehicle with four passengers inside in Johnson County.

At 1:15 a.m., Nathan T. Bertling, 21, of Holden, failed to negotiate a curve at Southwest 1501st Road as he was driving south on Southwest 1521st Road, according to a highway patrol crash report. His vehicle slid off the left side of the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned.

The crash injured Bertling and all four passengers. Only two passengers were wearing seat belts and had minor injuries.

Tyler J. Donegan, 14, and Hunter J. Rahe, 17, both of Holden, went in private vehicles for medical attention of minor injuries, Donegan to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and Rahe to Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg.

Corbin Deterding, 19, of Kingsville, and Alyssa N. Helm, 16, of Holden, suffered serious injuries. An ambulance took Deterding to Research Medical Center in Kansas City, and a Life Flight helicopter flew Helm to Children’s Mercy.

Bertling, who refused treatment, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, two counts of felony assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and careless and imprudent driving involving a crash, according to a highway patrol arrest report.

Holden teenagers swerve off road

Two teenagers were hurt in a single-vehicle crash at 9:15 p.m. Saturday in Johnson County.

Alexis L. Harmon, 17, of Holden, was eastbound on Northwest 100th Road when she encountered a westbound vehicle in the middle of the roadway a quarter of a mile west of Northwest 1521st Road, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report. She swerved to avoid impact and traveled off the right side of the roadway.

Her vehicle returned to the roadway and started to slide. Her car then rotated counterclockwise and crossed the center line. It traveled off the left side of the roadway where it struck a fence and came to a rest in a ditch.

Harmon suffered moderate injuries, and Christopher R. Hughes, 16, of Holden, had minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts during the accident and went in a private vehicle to Lee’s Summit Medical Center.

Overturn crash causes serious injuries

A Hughesville woman is in serious condition after overturning at 5:10 p.m. Sunday in Pettis County.

Mary L. McCartney, 57, traveled off the right side of southbound Route H a half mile north of Tevis Road, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report. Her vehicle struck a ditch, overturned and came to rest on its top.

McCartney was wearing a seat belt and suffered serious injuries. A Staff for Life helicopter flew her to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

Independence man hurt in Morgan County

An Independence man required ambulance transport after crashing in Morgan County on Sunday.

At 8:07 p.m., James E. Anderson, 75, failed to negotiate a curve on Ivy Bend Road 58 feet south of the North Ivy Bend Road Junction, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report. His vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and struck several trees before coming to rest.

Anderson, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained moderate injuries. An ambulance took him to Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach.
